Zanzibar’s Minister for Land, Water, Environment and Settlements, Salama Aboud Talib; Director General of the Zanzibar Petroleum Development Corporation (ZPDC), Mwanamkaa Abdulrahman Mohamed and Chief Executive of RAK Gas LLC, Kamal Mohamed Ataya have signed a Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) for the exploration of natural gas in the country.

The Zanzibar block has undergone field activities including pre-drilling aerial exploration and the development of the offshore infrastructure for test drilling.

The former holders of the exploration rights in the Zanzibar block, Antrim Energy of Canada told The East African that: “The Pemba-Zanzibae block has a prove hydrocarbon system, as evidenced by the Tundaua oil seep on Pemba Island and oil shows in previous exploration wells.”

The company also added that multiple source rocks and petroleum reservoirs are anticipated and numerous prospects have been mapped

About 70 percent of the license lies in water depths of less than 200 metres, with the Island of Pemba and Zanzibar providing possible on-shore drilling.
